Although the concept’s roots can be found in Greek mythology, it wasn’t until modern times that stored program computers were created. To comprehend human commands and carry out tasks that resemble those of humans, there are millions of algorithms and codes all around us. Example: Artificial intelligence is behind Facebook’s list of suggested friends for users and the pop-up pages that appear while browsing the internet informing users of upcoming sales for their favorite clothing and shoe brands.

AI is distinct from robotic automation powered by hardware. AI reliably completes frequent, high-volume computerized tasks rather than automating manual ones. AI is frequently confused with machine learning. Machine learning is just one component of the larger field of artificial intelligence (AI), which also encompasses technologies like natural language processing, inference algorithms, neutron networks, etc.

At the 2018 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, the Group of Seven (G7) focused on the governance of AI, promising to “promote human-centric AI” through sensible investments in cyber security, while taking privacy and the protection of personal information regarding the data that serves as the raw input for machine learning, seriously (G7 2018).

The Indian Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the digital economy and artificial intelligence during the two-day G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan. He emphasized that to develop these two areas, the government relies on the five “I’s” of inclusiveness, indigenization, innovation, infrastructure investment, and international cooperation. 

UN Secretary-General’sRoadmapon Digital Cooperation outlines the need for multi-stakeholder efforts on international cooperation so AI is used in a way that is “reliable, based on respect for human rights, safe and sustainable, and promotes peace.” Additionally, UNESCO has created a draft recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence that sets a global, thorough standard for Member States to consider and adopt. Although it is a crucial first step, deciding on shared guiding principles is not the most difficult part. The real work begins when the principles are put into practice. Ethical problems and conundrums arise in practice where principles and reality collide, and we must be ready for in-depth, challenging, multi-stakeholder ethical reflection and analyses.
